TIP 1: Brushing and Flossing Frequency
Bad breath is caused by the sticky plaque that builds up on oral surfaces and encourages bacterial growth. Food and debris linger between teeth, on the roof of the mouth and on the tongue, which act as a food source for bacteria. Our Hudson dentist recommends brushing at a minimum of twice a day and flossing at least once a day. However, there is no reason why individuals cannot perform the procedures more often if needed. In addition to thoroughly cleansing teeth, brush the roof of the mouth and tongue where bacteria, food and dead cells may also accumulate and cause undesirable odors. Oral appliance manufacturers even create tongue scrapers that effectively do the job.
TIP 2: Oral Rinsing
Simple bad breath treatments might simply include thoroughly rinsing your mouth with water following brushing and flossing. The forceful action of swishing and spitting goes a long way to eliminating contaminates found in the mouth. In addition to offering breath-freshening compounds, some mouthwashes also feature added oral protection by including ingredients that reduce plaque, kill bacterial colonies and help strengthen teeth.
TIP 3: Awareness of Odor Causing Foods
Dental hygiene tips include knowing what food culprits may also contribute to the problem. Dairy, fish and meats provide the proteins needed by sulphur-producing bacteria. Eggs, nuts, seeds and lentils cause a similar reaction. Sugars serve as a quick and simple bacterial food source. Acidic foods and beverages encourage bacterial reproduction. Alcohol is another problem. Brushing and flossing after consuming these substances are usually sufficient bad breath treatments. However, in the case of garlic and onions, the chemical compounds found in these vegetables travel through the bloodstream and to the lungs, which is then exhaled during respiration. Avoiding these two culprits before work or other social engagements alleviates a potentially embarrassing problem.
TIP 4: Keep Your Mouth Moist
When the interior surfaces of the mouth become dry from a lack of saliva, bad breath and tooth decay may occur. Resolve cotton mouth by drinking fluids throughout the day, chewing sugarless gum or enjoying a piece of sugarless hard candy. Gum and especially sour candies stimulate saliva production. Use humidifiers at home if living in particularly arid climates.
