Now that it’s September, most families with children are getting into the full swing of the school year. In order to help you get your ducks in a row, here are a few dental health tips that can help you keep your child in school, happy, and healthy this year! In a recent study published in the Journal of Public Health, it was found that among 100 school-aged students, up to 80 hours of school were missed due to dental pain and toothaches. The parents of those students missed an average of 2.5 work days to take their child to their pediatric dentist. The verdict is clear: taking your child to a twice-yearly dentist appointment keeps them in the classroom! It has also been shown that good oral health helps students have better grades and higher concentration.
As is true for most dentist offices, our schedules tend to fill up closer towards December, as parents and caretakers seek to use their insurance benefits before they expire in January. That means that the earlier you schedule your childrens’ check-ups, the more likely it is that you’ll be able to find an availability during the time of your choice. The longer to wait, the more likely it is that you will have to take off work and/or take your child out of school to attend the appointment. Those who come first will have their pick of the litter concerning calendar days.
Fluoride is a mineral which helps strengthen teeth and prevent cavities and tooth decay. Typically, it is added to city drinking water and toothpastes. If your house uses well water, or if you would like to boost your child’s enamel strength even further, consider scheduling a fluoride treatment. During this treatment, the fluoride will be placed directly on the teeth, usually in the form of a gel. When the mouth becomes acidic, the gel will release fluoride to help protect the teeth against cavity-causing bacteria.
In addition to fluoride treatments, your Hudson family dentist can apply dental sealants to your child’s teeth. These will seal the grooves and dips in the teeth, preventing plaque and bacteria from accumulating and creating cavities.
Children are prone to rough play and falls, and are therefore strong candidates for dental emergencies. It a tooth is knocked out or cracked, remain calm. Understand that your primary concern will be keeping the tooth moist. Carefully pick up the tooth without touching the root. You can keep it moist by having the child hold it in his or her mouth, between the cheek and gums; temporarily place it back in the socket; or place it in a small jar of milk. Then, schedule an appointment with your emergency dentist as soon as possible.
If your child cracks a tooth, have your child rinse with a glass of warm water. This will clean the tooth and remove any debris in the mouth. Place a cold cloth against your child’s cheek to stop any swelling or inflammation, and call your Hudson dentist for further care instructions.
