It may surprise you to learn that proper dental care begins when your child is just a baby. The American Dental Association recommends that a child’s first dentist appointment take place when he or she is a year old, or 6 months after the first tooth appears. In this article, our Hudson family dentist will discuss what to expect at your child’s first dental visit.
During your baby’s first dentist appointment, your dentist will explain proper brushing and flossing techniques to use as he or she gets older. Even though his or her participation will be limited, though, it’s important that your baby still be present for the appointment. Early, frequent visits to the dentist’s office will acclimate your baby to the dentist’s office, making him or her less likely to develop a dental phobia as he or she gets older. If more serious dental problems develop in the near future, you will find it invaluable to have your child already accustomed to the dentist’s chair.
Depending on your child’s age and tooth/gum condition, your children’s dentist visit might include:
After your initial visit, it is generally recommended to schedule a dental appointment once every 6 months. However, your dentist may recommend scheduling an appointment every 3 months in order to build up your child’s comfort levels with the dentist’s office.
As your child’s teeth emerge, continue to teach him or her the importance of brushing and flossing. Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste that carries the American Dental Associate’s seal of acceptance, and supervise brushing to make sure that no toothpaste is swallowed. If your child does not show interest in brushing, you might try a toothpaste with a fun flavor, like chocolate or banana, and then transition him or her to a stronger toothpaste as he or she gets older. Try to limit sticky, sugary foods, such as candy and gummies.
With proper supervision and frequent dental visits, your child will develop good dental habits that will serve them well for a lifetime.
